Batik Air Delay Compensation: What You Can Claim
Whether Batik Air owes you money for a delay depends on where your flight departed and which Batik Air you flew. On Batik Air (Indonesia) flights, Indonesian rules give you Rp 300,000 once a delay caused by the airline passes 4 hours. On flights to or from Malaysia you get meals from 2 hours and can choose a full refund from 5 hours. The well-known European compensation of up to €600 only applies to flights departing from the EU or UK.

Which rules apply to your Batik Air flight?
There are two airlines with the same name. Water batik is Indonesian (flight numbers start with ID). Batik Air Malaysia, formerly Malindo Air, is Malaysian (flight numbers start with OD). Your boarding pass shows which one you flew. What you can claim then depends on the route:
| Jou vlug | Reëls | Wat jy kan kry |
|---|---|---|
| Batik Air (ID) flight | Indonesian delay regulation PM 89/2015 | Drinks and meals from 30 minutes, Rp 300,000 after more than 4 hours if the airline caused the delay, rebooking or a full refund if the flight is cancelled |
| Any flight to or from Malaysia (incl. Batik Air Malaysia) | Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code (MACPC), amended in 2024 | Meals, internet and phone calls from 2 hours, hotel if you have to stay overnight (5+ hours), and a full refund option from 5 hours |
| Flight departing from the EU or UK | EU261 / UK261 | tot €600 (UK: £520) if you arrive 3+ hours late, unless the cause was outside the airline’s control |

Batik Air (Indonesia): what PM 89/2015 gives you
Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation regulation PM 89/2015 on delay management sets what scheduled Indonesian airlines must provide, based on how long the delay lasts:
| vertraging | What the airline must give you |
|---|---|
| 30-60 minute | 'n Drankie |
| 61-120 minute | A drink and a snack |
| 121-180 minute | A drink and a meal |
| 181-240 minute | A drink, a snack and a meal |
| Meer as 240 minute | Rp 300,000 vergoeding |
| Gekanselleerde vlug | A seat on the next flight, or a full refund of the ticket |
The meals are given at the airport, so ask the Batik Air desk at your gate when the delay starts. The Rp 300,000 is a fixed amount, not a percentage of your ticket. According to the Ministry of Transportation it is paid in cash, as a voucher that can be exchanged for cash, or by bank transfer, within 3 × 24 hours of the delay.
When the airline does not have to pay: the Ministry states that airlines are exempt when the delay is caused by weather, by operational factors outside the airline (such as airport or air traffic conditions) or by other factors beyond its control. Delays caused by the airline itself (the Ministry calls these management factors) do count.
Batik Air Malaysia: what the MACPC gives you
The Malaysian code applies to all airlines flying into or out of Malaysia, so also to Batik Air Malaysia and to Batik Air (ID) flights to Kuala Lumpur. It does not give a fixed cash amount for delays. Instead:
- From 2 hours: meals, internet access and phone calls.
- From 5 hours: a hotel and transport to it if you have to stay overnight.
- From 5 hours: since the 2024 amendment you can choose a full refund instead of flying. The airline must offer the refund in your original payment method first (a voucher only if you choose it), within 30 days of your request. The refund covers the ticket and mandatory charges such as taxes; there is no extra cash compensation. If you check in and still fly after the delay, the refund no longer applies.
- Rescheduled by 3 hours or more: a refund or a different routing if the new time no longer works for you.
Flights from Europe: the €600 rule
European rule EU261 (and UK261 in the United Kingdom) gives cash compensation of up to €600 per passenger when you arrive at your final destination 3 or more hours late. For a non-European airline such as Batik Air, it only applies to flights vertrek from an EU or UK airport. A Batik Air flight from Asia into Europe is not covered. Delays caused by bad weather, air traffic control strikes or airport incidents do not count.
How to claim from Batik Air, step by step
- By die lughawe: ask the Batik Air staff for the meals or hotel you are entitled to. Note the time you actually arrive at your final destination; that time counts, not the departure time.
- Keep your proof: boarding pass, booking confirmation, a photo of the departure board, and receipts for anything you had to buy yourself.
- Request your refund or compensation from Batik Air: use the refund form on Batik Air’s website. Malay Mail reported in September 2024 that Batik Air Malaysia does not process refund requests made more than 90 days after the flight, so do not wait. Tickets bought through a travel agent or booking site are refunded through them.
- No answer or a refusal? Complain to the aviation authority of the country your flight departed from, and include your proof.
When a claim service like AirHelp helps
Claim services mainly handle cash compensation under the European rules. If your Batik Air flight departed from the EU or UK, or you are not sure which rules apply, the free flight check of AirHelp tells you within a minute whether you can claim. They only charge a fee if your claim succeeds. For a refund or the Rp 300,000 under Indonesian rules you do not need a claim service: ask Batik Air directly as described above.
FAQ
Does Batik Air pay compensation for delays?
Yes, but what you get depends on the rules for your flight. Batik Air (Indonesia) flights fall under PM 89/2015: meals for shorter delays and Rp 300,000 after more than 4 hours, unless the delay was caused by weather or other factors outside the airline’s control. Flights to or from Malaysia fall under the MACPC: meals from 2 hours and a refund option from 5 hours.
How much is Batik Air delay compensation?
Under Indonesian rules it is Rp 300,000 for a delay of more than 240 minutes caused by the airline. Malaysian rules have no fixed cash amount but allow a full refund from 5 hours. Only flights from the EU or UK can give up to €600.
What is the Batik Air Malaysia delay compensation policy?
Batik Air Malaysia follows the Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code: care (meals, internet, phone calls) from a 2-hour delay, a hotel for overnight delays of 5 hours or more, and since the 2024 amendment the option of a full refund to your original payment method for delays of 5 hours or more, as long as you do not continue your journey.
Can I get a refund instead of compensation?
On a cancelled Batik Air (Indonesia) flight you can choose a full refund instead of a new flight. On flights to or from Malaysia you can choose a full refund when the delay is 5 hours or more.
What if the delay was caused by bad weather?
Then you usually get no cash compensation. Indonesian rules exempt airlines for weather and other factors outside their control, and the European rules exclude bad weather and air traffic control strikes. On flights to or from Malaysia you still get meals and care while you wait.
