As I love to combine cycling and sightseeing I went on the Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) cycling tour. This journey was not just about witnessing the present-day hustle and bustle of the city but also learning Vietnam’s rich and complex history.
Ho Chi Minh City has about 7.3 million motorbikes is it a busy city, YES – Do you have to worry when cycling? NO, just GO 🙂
Our dedicated local guide Phuc led us perfectly through the busy streets of HCMC. While he provided us with insightful information and refreshing hydration he also ensured we enjoyed a delightful lunch, adding to the richness of our experience. His passion for sharing HCMC’s stories was evident, and his skill in capturing a few snapshots along the way created cherished memories of our cycling adventure through Ho Chi Minh City.
Our tour began with a delightful insight into local customs, we learned about the tradition of Vietnamese men enjoying coffee with their pet birds. We visited several religious sites, including the Jade Emperor Pagoda, Vinh Nghiem Buddhist Temple, and Wat Chantaransay, where the peaceful coexistence of different cultures and religions in HCMC was beautifully evident.
A poignant moment was our visit to the Thích Quảng Đức Monument. Our guide recounted the moving story of Thích Quảng Đức and how his act became a symbol of the fight for religious freedom and civil rights, creating waves worldwide. The story, as narrated by our guide, left us with goosebumps and a lot of respect for this monk.
Lunch was a learning moment in itself. We savored traditional Vietnamese cuisine, and learned how to eat it properly. The flavors were rich, and the meal offered a delicious insight into the local culinary traditions. Never knew there are so many different flavours and options for Pho. During the meal we had a chat with our guide and learned a lot more about the daily life in HCMC these days.
During the tour, our guide illuminated the history of Vietnam, a land shaped by various influences and conflicts. The arrival of the Chinese and Burmese brought significant cultural and political shifts. The French colonial period left a lasting architectural and cultural impact, evident in the city’s buildings and cuisine. The tumultuous era of the Vietnam War, a time of immense struggle and resilience for the Vietnamese people, was a focal point of our learning. Finally, Vietnam’s journey to independence marked a new chapter, one of rebuilding and forging a unique identity.
Our afternoon was spent exploring the War Remnants Museum and witnessing the stark reminders of the Vietnam War. We also admired the French colonial architecture at the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, General Post Office, and Opera House.
After visiting the Ba Thien Hau Temple which was magical due to all candles and incents inside, we enjoyed an impromptu local coffee break in a nearby alley, sheltered from a sudden rain shower. This pause allowed us to absorb the day’s experiences amidst the tranquility of the rain.
After a 30 minute break we cycled through the vibrancy of Chinatown and the bustling atmosphere of Binh Tay Market provided a glimpse into the city’s commercial heart and daily life.
This biking tour through Ho Ci Minh City was an enlightening journey through the streets and history. From the bustling markets to the silent monuments and temples, each moment was a new discovery about Vietnam’s past and present. This tour is a must for anyone looking to understand the soul of this vibrant city.
