Langkawi is a island at the west coast of Malaysia and has a taxfree policy. A normal beer in Penang costs around 5 RM ($1.25) and on Langkawi you can get it for 2 RM. ($0.65)
Hostel in Langkawi
Zackry guesthouse is a nice and clean guesthouse/ hostel in Langkawi. The Zackry hostel is clean and safe. The owner is really nice and helpful. For example she has a car and when she has to go to the local market (30 min ride) you can join her for free. She is a traveler as well and try the best for you. She helps with the cheapest and best options to go around Malaysia. From the hostel to the beach is a 5 minute walk where you can beautiful sunsets in the evening. Close to the Zackry guesthouse is a minimart and some restaurants. My favorite restaurant is Melayu. It looks fancy and expensive but isn’t. The food is delicious!
What to do in Langkawi
You can do several tours in Langkawi from cycling in the forest, jungle trek to island hopping and mangrove kayaking. Rent a motorbike (they have a lot of police checkpoints when I was there so make sure you’ve a license) See the waterfalls. I liked the local market, a lot of cheap street food I bought my dinner and breakfast there. did a half day tour of island hopping. Thats nice and costs 35RM. They pick you up from the hostel and you see some islands and see eagle feeding place.
Beach in Langkawi
On a 5 minute walk there is the beach where you can see the sunset and do some watersport activities like the banana behind the boat, parasailing and waterscooters.
Taxfree shopping in Langkawi
When you stay 3 or more nights on Langkawi you can shop at the taxfreeshops and bring it to the mainland. They have a maximum what you can bring to the Malaysia mainland. When I was there it was one liter of stong liquor a person. If you want to bring liquor to the mainland they can ask you to proof that you stayed 3 or more nights in Langkawi. You can do that by a recieve of your hostel in Langkawi.
