Where to watch sunrise in Chiang Mai? That is what I asked myself when living in Chiang Mai and saw some stunning sunrises from places I couldn’t see sunrise properly. When you land on this page you probably have the same question what I had: What are the best sunrise spots in Chiang Mai?

Sunrise at Doi Suthep Viewpoint in Chiang Mai

A great spot to see sunrise in Chiang Mai is the special made viewpoint on the way to Doi Suthep temple. When you make your way up to Doi Suthep Temple its roughly half way and will be on your left hand side within a corner. The viewpoint will be announced with a blue sign on the left side of the road. An you will see a corner with some stall of streetfood & fruit. Possibly you will see some soi dogs (street dogs) but they don’t do anything.

Sunrise at Wat Palad (monk trail hike Chiang Mai – half way)

More of an active is getting to Wat Palad where you can see a great Sunrise on the Chiang Mai city “skyline”. When you hike the Monktrail to Doi Suthep this is a perfect moment to rest and enjoy the nature around while enjoying the great view. Once the legs are recovered again and maybe you ate your breakfast on the rock in front of the waterfall its time to walk the second part up and see Wat Doi Suthep on the top.

Sunrise at Doi Suthep Temple (monk trail hike Chiang Mai – all the way)

One of the most famous places to see sunrise in Chiang Mai is the Doi Suthep Temple. You can hike up to Doi Suthep, take a Red Truck, Taxi or ride up yourself with a motorbike. When you’re a traveler and comfortable to rent a motorbike this is by far the easiest to get to the Doi Suthep temple and see sunrise.

As you don’t have to wait on anyone and get there on your own time plus you get the advantage to ride the beautiful road up yourself. Beside that its also a cheap option as the rest of the day you’ve the motorbike to explore more around Chiang Mai. One of my favorites is the one day Motorbik Loop near Chiang Mai named Samoeng Loop. Other great options when you’re at Doi Suthep already are hiking the Mt Doi Pui Track to the summit and visit the Hmong Village.

My absolute Special Sunrise tip for Chiang Mai is at Mon Chaem

When you do the Samoeng Loop you’ve the chance to go glamping in the mountains near Chiang Mai. Just on the ride on a hour drive from the city you will find Mon Chaem. In this place you will find a lot of campgrounds that are offering small tents, Glamping tents and cabins in a price range from 500 baht up to 3000 baht per night per tent. (15 euro/dollar up to 90 euro/dollar per night per tent) The moment Im writing this they are still building new cabins and new tent platforms to fit all the request for this unique experience. TIP: Book in advance, as for holidays like Thai Fathersday weekend and around Christmas all the tents and cabins are taken.
